Doing the Best

The following devotion was chosen by Jack.  It is a real reminder that we should not be content to do just what is good but to strive to do what is best for God.

Doing the Best

"I know your deeds.  See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.  I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name."  Revelation 3:8

The church in Philadelphia was a faithful church.  Although they were weak, they remained steadfast in their faith and commitment to the name of Jesus.  The churches in Ephesus, Smyrna, and Pergamum were good churches but there was something that Jesus had against them.  They were content, perhaps, with the good and would not strive for the best.

We are seldom tempted to do what is obviously evil.  But doing what is good and average can rob us of the strength to do what is the best.  The Christian walk is more than just avoiding wrong things.  It is the direction of our energy into doing those things of most importance.  When our attitude is set in that direction, God can use us even in our weakness.  A humble German laborer said to a tourist visiting the cathedral of Cologne, "Yes, we built a beautiful cathedral."  "We?" asked the tourist.  "Yes, we."  "What did you do?"  "I mixed the mortar!"

When we, as godly people, strive to do our best, we can build the best.

Verse of the Day (NIV)
James 3:17-18 - “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.”
